Branding Pictures
Finally got a few branding pics. We were there all morning and he did his main bunch but had a few heifers at home to do and didn't need as many vaccinators so I got fired. Yay haha more beer and picture taking time. Been too busy at most brandings to take pics so this was a nice chance.

Work Day for Dee
After the clinic, I gave Dee a day off and then on the Tuesday my neighbors asked me to go help them gather cows cause they were preg checking. Had lots of help for the preg checking just needed me to help gather. Perfect :) They actually asked me to bring the pony and I thought they were just curious about her but turns out they got a pony for their kid and are riding it till he can. Well I didn't bring the pony, again no bit but I brought |Dee.
She was good, we got there early and so I left her in the trailer, I had already saddled her before I left home so she was ready. They came out to saddle and off we went. She was a little slower than last time I rode her gathering but that's good I was glad. And she didn't try to crowd the other horses I even made her walk away a few steps from them and had no argument.
All was good till the creek. It was really shallow and only about 1 step across and she leaped it like it was a huge fence! That was unexpected but at least she never hesitated haha. We got the cows and sure enough did the same thing on the way home, guess I'm gonna have to work on that but not when we are busy, there is lots of water around her shouldn't be a problem.
On the way home they asked it I would go over the hill and check by the fence to make sure we never missed any cows and so I did, took a little convincing but we got there slowly, lol, I made her trot most of the way and of course lots of steering but we did it. That's all I ask is if I can get the job done. Then came back to the group and we loped over to another bunch of cows, still not confident in loping and she broke down a few times but she did it. I really have to watch the cows when on her cause it takes longer to get her where I want to I cant wait too long till they are going the wrong way. All in all I was happy with her. I shoulda brought my go pro but never thought of it till I was there.
Then turns out one guy sanded his thumb off and was on a lot of drugs so he wasn't coming and another had something happen to so they needed my help to preg check as well. Which I don't mind, it was a nice day and they have nice cows. I ended up being the cow pusher and all cows went in really well except one, and it wasn't really her fault, they guy putting posts in was too slow and she backed out 3 times and then didn't want to go back in, but she eventually did, whew.
Dee had to stand tied to the fence the whole time, it was perfect for her, she has a serious lack of patience and so she wiggled and jiggled, thought about pawing and a little noise but no pulling back or stupidity, but she was glad to go home though I think. Oh well keep doing more and more and she will be a good horse like all my others.

Heifers from Donalda
So yesterday Neil and our neighbor Craig headed up to our north place to pick up our heifers. The ground was a little snowy in the morning and it can get really bad up there, so we wanted them home before we couldn't get them home.
They left about 9 and stopped for lunch up there and got back here about 5, so not too long a day. I generally end up going but if just me and Neil haul it takes 2 trips for me and 3 for Neil so its easier to hire someone to haul them all in one trip (and cheaper too). I kinda liked staying at home but it was weird cause I kept wondering how it was going all day.
But they came home and we left them in the corral overnight and chased them out to the cows this morning, almost went too smoothly. Then we hung around inside and had cocktails before supper. I had to move Razz and Jazz out of the corral and in too a different pen so they could unload the heifers and they were quite happy to follow me (and my oats, lol) into a pen that had some grass in it so it worked good for me I didn't have to feed last night. But they were quite happy to get out of there this morning though.

Hayes Sale 2012
On Saturday I headed up to the Hayes Brothers horse sale. The breed line bred Skipper W horses and have for many many years. They are only about 1/2 hour from my house and they have cows and horses next to our pastures down here so I like to go up there. I got my belle mare from there and also Razz came from there. Although both of them were not raised and sold by the Hayes, they both were sold there.
I looked through the catalog before hand to have an idea of what they were selling and had to pick out a few I thought I liked even though I had no intention on buying anything. There were about 6 I liked, both mares and gelding and so I wanted to watch the preview and see how they were in that. Sometimes there is stuff going on that lets me know I don't want a certain horse or there are others I skipped over that I thought were really nice in the preview.
First #3 Blue Eyes, he was so pretty that was what caught my eye at first. But he also looked good in the preview, a little more lively than some, which is fine, I kinda like that. He only sold for $1650, pretty good deal if I was looking.
And then #6 TSF Gun N Smoke, he was not there and so the Hayes boys put in one of their broke horses from their ranch string and he sold pretty good, for $4400. I also had #12 that was not there either. I guess that's why you pick a few cause no guarantees they will be there.
Then #15 Northern Royal Reed, he was also pretty and super duper quiet, I think he woulda made just a nice riding horse that coulda been used for anything. He sold for $3000, so more reasonable price, they should all be bringing that I think.
Then I picked the last horse of the sale, #45 WG Ima Tedi Too. She was very pretty and just nice, she sold for $3500, pretty good for a mare and the last horse of the sale.
While I was there I also saw a bay gelding I liked and he sold for $3500, pretty nice horse, woulda made an excellent ranch horse. And a mare I really liked, she was a little hotter and not very good in the arena, she only sold for $800 I think she is who I woulda chose if I was buying, super cheap and I liked her.
They had 3 girls riding there horses this year and they just put miles and miles on them and so they seemed a little quieter and it seemed to work for them. I sure like going up there and visiting my neighbors as well. It is probly the only horse sale I have gone to and made money at, lol. I had some halters for sale and one neighbor wanted them so I brought them up and he took them all. I was glad to get them out of my house and he was glad to be able to have some halters that aren't draft size.

Extra Horses
Monday I again went to the doctor. I am healthy, he says. I said I still cough and feel tired, and he says that the cough can last up to two more weeks and I will feel more rested by then as well, but stay away from sick people as I am very suseptible to getting reinfected. So good news I guess.
Anyways on the way to the doctor I seen the mysterious footprints in the yard,
then I seen a telltale sign that horses had been running through our yard.
Well after reading Loves Ranchlife and More where their horses escaped, I was pretty worried about our ponies. Although I did think it was weird that they would leave cause the babies are in the corral and there was tons of hay and oat bales in the yard and I couldn't see how they would get through at least 2 fences.
But after talking to the hubby and seeing my own horses, I knew we had the neighbors horses wandering in the yard. They were pretty easy to tell apart, 9 horses, a pony and a mule. And two of the horses were paint and one an appy, so we should have been able to recognize whos they were.
We called two different neighbors and they werent there, Neil went to visit two others and they weren't thiers, so we were confused, no other close neighbors have horses.
So yesterday we were in town all day and we had a thought about 6 miles up the road from us last summer one neighbor had a bunch of horses like this, so we phoned and sure enough they are his. Not sure how they got all that way through all kinds of fences, cause the tracks to our house came from the south, but who knows, just glad they got here instead of on the highway or something.
They came this morning with a stock trailer and it took two loads, but they all got home again.
