Driving Clinic at Alberta Carriage Supply

I dunno if I mentioned it before I love driving!  Mostly the drafts but its all kinda fun, so when I heard that Alberta Carriage Supply was having an intro to driving clinic I thought it would be a good place to go as a refresher and see if I still like it (haha)

He said be there by 8 so I was and we talked a bit about what our history was with horses and driving and I just said I had a team that was too green for me so I got rid of them but I sure would like a team again at one time (that's part of the reason I'm trying to downsize the horses I need room for them)  A few others had little experience and a couple had pretty much no horse experience for a lot of years.  There was 7 of us there, a nice number for the groups.

We split up into 2 groups, ours got to work with the draft team first, Nelly and Shelly.  They were an old Amish team and pretty much tolerated everything super well.  We harnessed and then went and ground drove them in the corral outside.  The other group worked with the light horses, then it was lunch time and we switched.

The light horse team was a Canadian named Fabio and a mini called Kipper (or Kippersoff, lol)  She said mini is not the appropriate name anymore they are now referred to as VSE or very small equine.  Stupid politically correct people I'm sure the horse don't care one way or the other.  Anyways we harnessed them as well and then drove Fabio in the 2 wheeled cart and Kipper in his mini cart.  She does combined driving with them so they are used to go quite fast, we mostly stayed to a walk with Fabio and a little trot with Kipper.

Then we were all done but it was still early so we hooked up all different kinds of wagons, the snake oil wagon, a smaller grain wagon and the Houp.  Everyone got a turn driving each vehicle and it was fun, we even got to lope Chinook on the Houp, that was kinda cool how she can go fast and then just as easy slow down.  Each horse/team is a little different in sensitivity and how much they test you.  I took the team on the snake oil wagon down the road one way and back then down the road the other way to the neighbors driveway and back, that was lots of fun, I think I still like the drafts better but the others were really fun as well.  Haha I even got a ride from another member when we were putting away the carts, lol.

Never got pics till after lunch as I never even thought of it, and today I got an email from a girl who took a bunch on her phone, so that was cool to have some of myself too.  Maybe a certain yellow horse will learn to drive ;)

I think I would like to have a Canadian for driving and riding. That one is beautiful, and looks a lot like a Morgan.

That is one wide rainbow!
Sounds like you had fun, I like driving too but not enough to get into it. We used to have a Standardbred mare that Ted drove, she was lots of fun, I even rode in the cart with another friend doing the driving, in the Calgary Stampede Parade with her.
