Pasture Ponies and Texas

Yesterday I went to the dentist again :(  I guess I shoulda gone more often and it wouldn't be so bad, but now I got 2 appt for cavities, well fillings I guess and I gotta go to Calgary for a root canal cause my jawbone is getting eaten away.  Somehow none of this hurt or I woulda gone sooner.  But anyways after I got home I saw all the ponies close by and thought I should have a good look at them since its been a few days.  I went out there and they all look pretty good, fat and furry.  And I guess the cold don't bother them but brr I was chilly.

I got a few pics of them to look at when i am down in Texas at the Futurity so I wont be thinking I need another pony, I know I will see something there I like!  But no new ponies for me this trip.  But am sure excited to go!!!!  We are gonna make a stop in at the AQHA World show in Oklahoma city to see my friends sisters horse go in the finals that should be cool.  And of course the stockyards at Fort Worth and the cutting!  Oh I just cant wait!  Lots of pics will be taken and oh so many memories.  I do kinda wish we were gonna be there for the finals and some of the sales, but oh well maybe next year :)

Fridays For Sale --Ponies

So since I will have more money and time wrapped up in Jessie this year and I already had too many horses last year than I wanted to ride, its time for me to become serious about who to sell and who to keep.  If it were only a money issue I wouldn't worry about it, I can live pretty frugal and its pretty cheap for me to keep a horse here cause they are on pasture all year and with feet and worming and vaccines I think it costs me $225 per year per horse, so not really gonna save  a lot by not having them here, I would prefer they are somewhere they can be used.  I am thinking pretty much all of them are for sale, except of  course Jessie and Neil's horse George, and probly not Razz, but if the home and price are right I might reconsider.

First off The Broke ones :

1.  Bailey aka Baileys Coffee.  She is a registered AQHA mare, red dun in color and 9 years old this year.  She has done pretty much anything I ever do with horses, arena riding, outdoor riding, trails, mountains, barrels (somewhat, lol) ranch work, can throw a rope off her, if I get team roping this summer I will probly end up taking her.  She has a lot of energy and needs a job, not a horse to get on once a week for a plod around the property, the more she gets ridden the happier she is.  Super easy to catch (comes when called ), easy to trim, has never had shoes, easy to worm and vaccinate.  Leads, ties and loads easy.  Just a nice horse to be around.  Really like people.  But not for a beginner as she has waaay too much energy and too smart for a beginner.  If you know how to ride, you will like her.  Asking $4500 for her now.  More info on here here or just search her name in the search box.

2.  Kali aka  Dual Rita.  She is a registered AQHA mare, bay with a stripe.  She is out of Dual Pep and a Smart Chic Olena mare.  Super well bred, super cute, athletic and kind.  She is only 5 years old right now but in a couple years she will be an awesome kids horse.  She has had some cutting training, has the ability, just doesn't want to.  Nice arena horse, slower.  Good outside but doesn't like water puddles.  Has had lots of riding and just a generally nice quiet horse.  Asking $4500 for her.

3.  Disco aka Play Like Disco.  She is a registered AQHA mare that is out of Hottrodders Disco, a wonderful cutting stallion.  She is bay with very little white.  She is 18 this year, was rode till she was 8 or so then became a broodmare for a while.  She has had one foal here and then I got on and rode her a few times.  She was a little herd bound but otherwise  just walked and trotted off like it was no big deal.  Think it would take very little to get her back riding again or she is plenty healthy enough to raise a few more colts.  Asking $1500 for her, open right now.

4.  Jazz aka Strait Summer Jazz.  She is a registered APHA mare, black in color with 4 socks and a white face and 3 years old this year.  She has not been started under saddle yet but I plan to this spring get her started.  She is a sweetheart, has loved people since she was born.  Is halter broke and has had her feet done although needs a little more consistent work on that.  She was raised here, out of my Razz mare and a Strait From Texas stud who had to be put down from injury.  Asking $1500 for her if sold before started.

5.  Magic aka Miss Magic Hickory.  She is a registered AQHA mare, 5 years old and a pretty sorrel in color.  I had great plans for this mare, but ran out of time.  She is halter broke, kinda hard to catch need lots of work but I think will come around quickly if consistent.  Asking $1200 for her.

6.  Belle aka LT Belle San Tivio.  Belle is a AQHA registered mare who is sorrel with the rabicano gene.  She is halter broke, leads, ties, load super easy.  Has not been ridden in 6 years and is just scared when ridden so I never have done much with her, just cause I had 2 others at the time I could ride easy.  She has raised an awesome sorrel colt that is 3 this year and lives in BC now.  She is 10 years old and could easily raise lots more colts, she is a really good mother and easy breeder, easy keeper.  Not a troublemaker and stays out of trouble.  Asking $1000 for her open right now.

7.  I hate to put her in but we will see.  Razz aka Little Summer Razz DC.  She is a registered APHA mare, papers say buckskin but she is smokey black.  She is 7 years old and a awesome ranch horse.  She is super athletic, has lots of energy, no buck, willing to go all day everyday and not tire out.  Super sensitive and yet sensible at the same time.  And pretty to boot!  She also has done everything, super well broke, rides in a bosal, hope to get her in a bit this year.  She does not like the snaffle bit but will work in it.  She has done some cutting, lots of ranch work, trail rides, sortings   Asking $5500 for her to the right home.

So I am in no hurry to sell, but I really would like to get down to 4 or 5 here, I think that is a reasonable amount for me to have and that is what my summer pasture will hold (it can hold 6 if the weather is gonna continue to be wet like it has been)  I also am gonna list them on Northern Horse and on my Facebook page. I feel bad I don't have the time to spend with them all, otherwise I would keep them as pasture pets, but I know most of them, mostly Bailey, do not like that, they want to go and do something.

Farrier Day Again

Today was farrier day at my house.  He was coming at 2:30 so at 1:30 I went out to get the ponies.  The weather was above zero but there was a wind.  Of course the wind was coming from towards me so the horses never heard me till I was really close even though I was calling them.  Finally they all seen me and I was only about 50 feet away.  They were surprised and I didn't think they were gonna come, which would suck cause I never brought out any halters, but again I underestimated my Bailey girl, she comes galloping over and leads the rest up too :)

(I was being watched)
I get them in the corral and go to get some halters and see Jason!  I had to ask him if he was early and was lucky he said yes, whew, I didn't think I was that behind.  I caught Jessie, Kali and Bailey and led them out and we did them first then he said he had more time so I got George, Razz and Disco.  I didn't know how much time he had cause when he phoned back he talked to Neil and Neil never asked all the questions, just the time.  But he said he had time so they got done too.

I turned out everyone except Jessie and Kali they stayed in the corral and they didn't even notice the others leaving, just got sidetracked by sticking their head in the bale.  The place we want to board is putting in new fences with pipe poles and their pen is not done yet :(  I sure hope its soon or I might have to start hauling somewhere to ride, way to slippery here at home, specially with Jessie and her shoes.

Then afterwards I cleaned my brushes cause they were so grimy I didn't even want to touch them, I am liking the way they come out, almost looks like new.

Eclipse??

So Sunday night was supposedly and eclipse.  And I checked it out and it said it would be seen above Calgary between 6:04 and 7:14.  I realized we are not in Calgary so I figured a little leeway either side should be good. I went out about 6:15 and nothin was going on, but it was also hazy so kinda hard to see.  But I got a couple pics anyway and got a cloud over it which I thought was the eclipse till it went away and I realized it wasn't dark enough so I looked at the pics and saw it was a cloud.

But while I was out there, I was standing by the horse gate and saw Disco there.  She saw me too, but she  isnt a tattler and just went back to eating after seeing me just standing there not coming in.  She is so pretty, I should be  riding her too.

While Disco was grazing there was this little bird out there right by her nose and Disco kept pushing it away it was real cute and the bird never left.  I wonder if its the ones who eat bugs.

I was trying to get some pics of Jazz without her knowing I was there cause otherwise she is too close, but she wasn't very cooperative, I did get her itching

And then I thought I had been spotted here

But nope, she just kept on grazing, there sure is a lot of grass out there.  And then after a few more sun pics, she definitly did spot me.

And of course starts heading over to me.  Which I am not complaining about, but hard to get pics of.  But on the way she got distracted by Disco needing some scratches.

And a few more shots of clouds over the sun.

And a a far away shot about 7 that definitely has no eclipse, but almost a sundog.

I guess I will have to wait for another eclipse to get better pics.

Chores

So this morning I was in the house trying to get energetic to go do my chores and I look outside and this is what I see :)

I love being able to see her from the living room window.  I can see the pasture horses if I look out the side window but I have to stand to for that and if they are at the far end of the pasture its hard to see them, and the ones in the corrals are out the porch window, but Magic is right out the living room.  I might have to keep someone there all summer just so I can look out and see them.

The pasture horses are so well behaved that they just eat out of their piles and don't even bother moving from one to another, its kinda weird but kinda nice.

The others however haven't got that figured out.  Well mostly they do except Jazz and since everyone lets her eat from their pile she never eats alone.  I mentioned how she was almost as tall as Razz and today they were standing side by side and so I got a pic so its more visible.  I'm glad too cause sometimes I think I am imagining things if I don't see them more than once.  But I definitly think she will be taller than Razz.  Which is too bad cause I like Razz's size.

And I love Disco's face, she is so cute :)  Even with the wild horse look of branches everywhere (which I never noticed till I got back in the house to look at the pics.)

More Feet -- Disco and Shasta

Well I finally got pics of Disco and Shasta's feet, and they are not perfect and hopefully will improve a little.  First off Disco, she has really tall feet (which I don't know if its bad, just not what I am used to and they are better than when I got her last year) and her right front had an injury at some point at the back inside of the heel.
A front view:

And a side view:

First left Front (which I see her frog needs to grow a little):

Then left hind:

And right front:

and right hind:

And then onto Shasta, I had to take a pic of her cause they both have dark legs so then I could tell where the different feet started.  Not the best pic of her but I love the outlining of her ears,  you can see it when riding too :)

And her front view (no her foot is not really that crooked shes just standing funny):

And her side view she has the opposite problem as Disco, her feet are very flat.I wish I woulda taken in a little farther away so you could see how much its not in a straight line from her knee.

Her left front:

Left hind:

Right front:

and Right hind:

So I guess now I have something to compare to in future when I get thier feet where they need to be.  Not as obvious on some horses cause they always have good feet, but sure makes you notice the differences in them.  But next time I think I might have to get someone else to hold them when I take the pics.

Decisions

Well I have to make some decisions here pretty quick.  I have three horses boarded at Jardi's right now and that will get a little too expensive for me to keep it that way and seeing as I had planned on only having one there over the winter this is not gonna last.  But I don't know who to take home.

My original plan was to take Razz home and ride Disco all winter and see what she can do, but now I have an option to take lessons from Doug and I think I would be better off taking Razz.  And I never even planned on Shasta cause I am pretty suspicious about people wanting to trade until the deal is actually done.  So now I have her to think of too.

If I went the easy way I would take Disco home and just ride Shasta for a while then ride Razz.  But I know I should ride Disco more and give her a fair chance.  And I kinda want to ride Shasta more cause I am kinda liking her.  I was kinda hoping it would be nice enough out that I could ride her outside and hopefully see if her lope improves.  I think it is better than the first time, but still seems like someone has either held her back all the time or just doesn't know how to stretch out.  I checked her back the other day and I couldn't find a single sore spot.  Oh and I measured her and she is just a smidge under 15 hands.  So just about perfect.

I shall go today and ride them all hopefully and try  to make a choice.  I should at least decide between the weekend for them as well as me.  Cause I know I am not enthused about riding three and by the time I get to the third one I don't even want to ride anymore.  And I feel like if I want to ride more than 20 minutes I am exhausted.  I need to ride longer than that at least on who I am going to take to lessons or they just don't stay in good enough shape.

And I better get on the ball cause the show last Saturday was cancelled for not enough entries so if I want to go sooner is probly better than later.  I am okay with fewer entries and I think after Christmas is when more people show up.  But should still be okay.  Char was asking Doug about showing and he says he wouldn't go to small shows like that unless he was schooling so who knows.  But since I am riding razz with reining I will be schooling so it might be better for us.  He suggested we show ACHA (Alberta Cutting Horse Association) next year especially if she wants to go to the Supreme cause if we are competitive there she should be okay.

Tuesday and Wednesday

Yesterday Charlene had a lesson booked with Doug Reinhardt so we loaded up Dude and headed out there.  She was pretty nervous about going by herself and I kinda wanted to visit as well so I went along too.  She rode Dude on the flag and he was pretty good then Doug got on him and found a few problems, but all in all thought he was doing pretty good.  She kinda wanted someone to take him for a month or so and tune him cause its been a long time since he has really been in training and she doesn't want to mess him up.  Doug isn't sure that is what he needs but wants to see him on cattle on Friday so we are going back Friday to work cows.  I got to see Kali in the barn and she looked tired, i had to wake her up to get a look at her.  But Doug said he will wait on Friday till I get there so I can see her on cows.    Im pretty excited!!  It will be a long night cause after that we are going up to Ponoka to stay overnight and Char is gonna show on Saturday.  I will bring Razz up as well but we are not gonna show.  I was gonna bring Shasta but after only two rides on her I think it might be pushing it a little bit yet, maybe next time.

Tonight I went a rode Shasta again, I am kinda liking her, didn't really expect that.  We did quite a bit of trotting and she is sure smooth, really like that.  I asked her for a lope today and she was all balled up, it was really weird, like she didn't know she could go fast or she was sore or something.  It was odd.  But she kept going till I asked her to stop and wasn't grouchy or anything.  I totally meant to check her back and measure her before we left but forgot.
(rabbit hopping through our yard today)

Afterwards I sucked it up and got on Disco.  She didn't really want to leave the door area, but we got her going around following Dude and she sure still mouths the bit a lot.  Still responds to it, but constantly chewing it.  Just a plain snaffle, but she don't like it very much.  She didn't respond very well to my leg either, kinda just ignored it, but we will see I imagine that will come back pretty quick.  I just walked her around both directions about 10 minutes and quit.  She walks really fast when she wasn't trying to stick to the door, was kinda nice.
(rabbit hiding after Neil tried to chase it towards me)

Then since I had Razz all tacked up I rode her too.  I was pretty exhausted but she was all ready to go and it had been a couple days since I rode her that I thought I had better.  I never rode in my spurs cause they were on my other boots in my truck and she acted like normal still so that was good. I like to know I am not relying on the spurs all the time.

I thank you all for your comments, BEC, I had no idea about any of her breeding, so that helped a lot.  And Shirley I feel real stupid for not thinking of getting her teeth checked especially since we just got our others done 2 weeks ago.  And Leah I liked the name Sage too, but where I board there is a Sage and that just gets too confusing having horses with the same name.  And Janice, she is in with Disco right now and Disco bosses her around but they seem to get along well.  Eventually she will get kicked out with Razz and Dude and Jardi's few shes riding.  She is registered as a Dun, but kinda a buckskinny color now, real cool markings though dark stripes on shoulders and legs.   Although she has no forelock to speak of and her bridle path had been trimmed and now looks funny, but I think that will all eventually grow out.  I think she is close to 15 hands, but I will get a stick on her maybe on Friday if I am there early enough.
